Tips from Calgary Professional Photographers
Choosing what to wear for a photography session can feel surprisingly stressful. Many clients tell me this is the part they worry about the most before their photos.
The good news is that it does not need to be complicated. The goal is simply to wear clothing that feels comfortable, fits well, and reflects your personality. As one of the Calgary professional photographers who has photographed thousands of sessions over the past 20 years, I have learned that simple choices usually create the most beautiful photographs.
Below are a few helpful tips to make choosing outfits easy and stress free.
Simple Colours Always Work Best
Clothing with simple colours usually photographs beautifully. Solid tones help keep the focus on the person rather than the clothing.
Neutral colours like black, grey, navy, cream, and soft earth tones tend to work very well in photographs. These colours also mix nicely if more than one person is in the photo.
Avoid extremely bright neon colours or busy patterns, as they can sometimes distract from the natural feel of the image.
Bring a Few Outfit Options
One of my favourite tips is to bring more than one outfit to your session. Even if we only use two looks, having options allows us to choose what photographs best once you arrive.
Layers such as jackets, scarves, or sweaters can also create variety without requiring a full outfit change. Small changes can create completely different looks in your photos.
What to Wear for Professional Headshots
For professional headshots, clean and polished clothing works best. Many clients bring a professional outfit along with a slightly more relaxed option.
Business jackets, blouses, and simple shirts tend to photograph well and keep the look professional. The goal is to create an image that reflects confidence and approachability.

What to Wear for Family Photography
For family sessions, coordinating colours usually works better than matching outfits. Choosing a colour palette that complements each other helps create a natural and balanced look in the final images.
Soft colours, comfortable clothing, and outfits that allow kids to move easily will help everyone feel relaxed during the session.

What to Wear for Boudoir Photography
Boudoir sessions are a little different because the clothing choices are much more personal. Clients often bring a variety of items such as lingerie, robes, oversized sweaters, or even a partner’s dress shirt.
Simple lace pieces, soft fabrics, and clothing that makes you feel confident can create beautiful images. Bringing a few options gives us flexibility to create different moods and styles throughout the session.

The Most Important Tip
The most important thing to remember is to wear something that makes you feel comfortable and confident. When you feel good in what you are wearing, it naturally shows in your photographs.
As one of the Calgary professional photographers who works with people from all walks of life, I guide clients through the entire session so they feel relaxed and comfortable in front of the camera.
If you ever feel unsure about what to bring, you are always welcome to bring a few options and we can choose together.
